AIDS HIVwas first reported in the United States in 1981 and has since become a major worldwide epidemic. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. By killing or damaging cells of the body’s immune system, HIV progressively destroys the body’s ability to fight infections and certain cancers. People who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS can get dangerous infections called opportunistic infections. These infections are caused by microbes such as viruses or bacteria that usually do not make healthy people sick.
HIV Causes AIDS
Since 1981, more than 980,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the United States to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to CDC, more than 1,000,000 Americans may be infected with HIV, one-quarter of whom are unaware of their infection. The HIV epidemic is increasing the most amoung minority populations and is leading killer of black males between age 25 and 44. According to CDC, AIDS affects nearly seven times more African Americans and three times more Hispanics than whites. In recent years, an increasing number of African-American women and children are being affected by AIDS/HIV.
HIV destroys CD4 positive (CD4+) T cells, which are white blood cells crucial to maintaining the function of the human immune system. As the virus attacks those cells, the person infected with HIV is less equipped to fight off infection and disease ultimately resulting in the development of AIDS.
Generally people who are infected with HIV can have the viruses for a realtively long period before the immune system starts to fail. However, there is a strong connection between high levels of HIV in the blood and the decline in CD4+ T cells and the development of AIDS. Antiretroviral medicines can reduce the amount of virus in the body, preserve CD4+ T cells and dramatically slow the destruction of the immune system.

No one will give you a specific cause of IBS. Some experts think IBS is a Motility Disorder. A hyperactive or oversensitive gut is another possible cause of IBS. and the gut will react to changes influenced by food, hormones and stress.
With the typical chaotic bowel habit of IBS, it is not surprising that it is thought of as a motility disorder. The transit time from ingestion of food to excretion is abnormal.
In diarrhoea the transit time is faster and in constipation it is slower. IBS is generally divided into two groups, constipation predominant and diarrhoea predominant. In some cases constipation and diarrhoea alternate. Stools in IBS can vary from hard pellets to watery and unformed.
Some say there is a link between diet and IBS.
Certain foods will trigger IBS symptoms. Just eating food stimulates intestinal muscle activity. This is a normal action and the most common is the Gastro colic reflex. This reflex is strongest after breakfast. Gastro-Colic reflex in IBS is strongest after fatty or large meals. This results in abdominal pains and or diarrhoea.
Food is not a cause of IBS but can trigger symptoms.

The Gut has the richest supply of serotonin in the body. This chemical is closely connected to the nervous system. Significant research is currently done on the chemical and its role in IBS.
Serotonin affects the nerves in the intestine and controls contractions of the smooth muscles of the gut. High serotonin levels are found in diarrhoea and low levels in constipation.
The gut can be affected by stress, anxiety and depression. Trauma suc h as physical, sexual and emotional abuse can affect the gut. In IBS, records show a higher incidence of such trauma. Addressing these issues may produce better long term results.
Gastroenteritis as a cause of IBS: IBS can develop is 20-30% of cases of severe gastro-enteritis. The common infective organisms are Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella shigella, and Escherichia coli. Serotonin levels in gastro-enteritis is very high and in cases that develop IBS this high level continues.
In women with IBS, the hormones progesterone and estrogen vary during the menstrual cycle and the symptoms may fluctuate. The passage of food residue along the large gut is affected by the female hormones.
Prof. Jonathan Brostoff of Middlesex Hospital believes that yeast is involved in some cases of IBS. These patients have reduced levels of friendly bacteria, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria in their large bowel. This results in overgrowth of Candida.
